Lily Embury is 10 years old and she spent the better part of this past year training for a half marathon to raise money for the Muscular Dystrophy Association--particularly, to send kids with MD to MDA camp.
MDA camp holds a very special place in Lily's heart (and ours!) because it was the first camp she ever went to! Lily was born with a congenital muscular dystrophy and it was at MDA camp that she really experienced for the first time what it was like to not be only kid who was different or needed help. She has gone to MDA camp 3 summers and loves it and so when she became one of the Central Kentucky Goodwill Ambassadors last year, she decided she wanted to raise money for other kids to go to MDA camp (it's funded entirely by MDA and donations--no camper pays to go to camp).
Fortunately, Lily's MD affects only the muscles in her upper body so she can still run, although her gait and balance are a bit off. As a result she isn't as fluid or as fast as other kids her age might be. That said, her efforts over the past year (she trained from June 2011 through Feb 2012--and is actually still running!) to train for the Myrtle Beach half marathon were a success and she ran the MB half in 2:54 and raised over $4000 for kids to go to MDA camp!!
Since February she has continued to train and a few weeks ago completed the Buffalo half marathon in 2:22. She is already trying to figure out how she can be involved with coaching other kids as a way to keep giving back to our community.
