13 year old Megan Swift has raised over $9099.67 since October 2008 by using her love of crafts to make and sell Good Luck Spiders, earrings, angels, and raffle tickets mostly at the Metcalfe Farmers Market. All proceeds from the sales (the $9099.67 so far and counting) go to the Women’s Breast Health Centre in Ottawa for breast cancer treatment, education, equipment, and research. Megan’s paternal grandmother is a breast cancer survivor so Megan wants a cure found.
The Good Luck Spiders are $5 each with $4 going to breast cancer and $1 for the supplies, the earrings $6 each with $4 to breast cancer and $2 for supplies, the angels are $3 each with $2 for breast cancer and $1 for supplies, all the money from the raffle is going to breast cancer as all the prizes are donated.
Each spider takes at least 15- 30 minutes to make so there is a huge time element here especially when attending school.
Megan received the Osgoode Volunteer Youth Award in 2009, the Spirit of the Capital Youth Award for Entrepreneurship - Runner Up in May of 2010, and the Youth Social Entrepreneurship award at the Corporate and Community Social Responsibility Conference November 16th, 2010.
Megan was joined by Kait Moore in the summer of 2010. In December 2010 Megan, Kait and friends held a huge workshop at Castor Valley Elementary School in which they helped the grade 7 and 8 students make 146 Good Luck Spiders in one day. Fifty-five of these spiders were purchased by the kids with the others given back to the girls to help them raise money for breast cancer. Megan’s enthusiasm for helping others has infected several of her friends who are planning on helping out this fall with Good Luck Spiders to earn their volunteer hours for High School.
Megan and Kait are now taking orders from people for their goods and have shipped items within Canada so far.
