| Luisa Macena is 13 years old and Paula Macena is 11 years old. They have
been active helping other kids since they were very young. When Luisa was 8
she cut her hair to donate to kids with cancer. When Paula was 7 she did
the same.
When Luisa was 9 she was an advocate for the animals and even
helped to promote a bike parade to create awareness about it.
For the last year Luisa and her sister Paula have put their efforts in an Anti-Bullying campaign. They created a facebook page called Anti-Bullying Project to help kids who have been bullied and they made wrist bands to sell to friends and people they know. The money will be used to buy awareness material for the schools. They are now in the process of organizing an Anti-Bullying Walk-thon for September
2013.
They have a huge heart for people and are always willing to help
others, that's why I think they are heroes.

| Elayna Hasty has been actively involved with community service since she was 6 years old just going to nursing homes to mingle with the residents and playing Bingo. As she became older her mom noticed Elayna’s love of animals so they started visiting and helping at their local animal shelter but it was when she was only 9 years old Elayna really felt that she needed to take a stand.
Elayna had some experiences with bullying, but it was when her friend that she cared a great deal about faced the same issue she came up with GAB Girls (Girls Against Bullying Girls).
Elayna’s friend was so devastated from other girls being purposely mean that her mom took her out of public school and started to home school her. Elayna and her friend would talk like young girls do, but not about childhood things. They would talk about hurt feelings from others and how they could still stay strong despite the cruel insults. | Jen Rubino is a driven and inspirational teen who has taken her own pain
and turned it into a charity impacting thousands of people. Her own
experiences as a "hospitalized kid" undergoing more than 20 surgeries in the
hospital to treat a connective tissue illness made her realize there is a
need for ways to brighten the days of hospitalized kids and teens.
This is
why she started Cards for Hospitalized Kids(CFHK) in 2011, a charitable
organization that distributes uplifting handmade cards to hospitalized kids
nationwide. CFHK also provides other support such as recovery inspiration
journals, letters, hats for chemo patients and more. Though CFHK began
locally it has grown into a movement with people around the nation and
abroad--schools, churches, teams, individuals, families and more--sending
in handmade cards for Jen's organization to distribute to hospitals.
Celebrities such as Actress Lucy Hale, Olympian Aly Raisman, Singer Jesse
McCartney and more are also involved and send autographs to Jen for kids to
receive along with the cards. Over 19,000 hospitalized kids in more than
200 hospitals nationwide have received cards from Jen and her charitable
organization. Through her charity, Jen is also making an impact of another
kind by inspiring others to give back and persevere through their own
challenges.

| 10-year-old Toronto-based Hannah Alper, one of the most popular kid bloggers, launched her STOP, START AND CONTINUE campaign for Earth Hour 2013, happening March 23rd and also Earth Day on April 22nd.
Hannah said children and kids are passionate about supporting causes that
promote help and change for the environment. “Earth Hour should be a time
to connect with your family and friends to talk about and renew your
commitment to the environment. This Pledge and certificate encourages
individuals and families to consider what they can do - STOP, START and
CONTINUE in the year ahead for the well-being of the environment. Earth
Hour encourages all of us to unplug and shut off. I want people to really
think about why they are shutting down for the hour and think about what
they can do to help. We can all do something.” Location: Toronto Ontario, Canada School: Unspecified

| My name is Jessica Carscadden. I started the "We Care Bears Project".
One day I was cleaning out my stuffed animals and a lot of them were almost
new, many still had the tags on them. The fire department comes into contact with children at fires, auto accidents or EMT calls. The kids they meet are often scared. I thought kids would be less scared if they fireman had a stuffed animal to give them. The fireman didn't have any stuffed animals and they were happy I donated mine.
I am only one girl and I took all of my animals to the fire department but
I know the police department also comes into contact with kids who are
scared so I made a plan.
I talked to the principal at my school, Dr. Newman, and asked him if I could ask the whole school to donate stuffed animals. Then maybe we could have enough stuffed animals to put some in the trunk of all the police cars at our local Sheriff's station AND in the fire trucks and ambulance. Dr. Newman thought it was a good idea and that maybe if I presented it to the Monterey Ridge Elementary School Student Council they could help me with the project.

| 14-year old Winter Vinecki initially had thoughts of racing as a means of bringing light to the growing epidemic of childhood obesity. This all changed one spring morning in 2008. Winter found her true cause in which to race for, founding Team Winter (501 (c) 3) to honor her dad.
In May 2008, Winter experienced personal hardship that would prove to be the defining moment in her life and career as an athlete. After a series of medical tests, her dad, Michael, was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive form of prostate cancer. The grim prognosis was met not only with sadness but with determination. Winter vowed to do everything in her power to put an end to prostate cancer and help find a cure so that other families wouldn't have to endure the personal hardships that hers were going through. Thus, Team Winter became a vessel for funding prostate cancer research and raising prostate cancer awareness on a global scale. | Owen Byrne's love for origami led him to Origami Salami and the Folding for Good project, which folded peace cranes for distribution to the Sandy Hook, CT, community. He organized 'folding parties' at both his school and his local Cub Scout pack, and through his efforts, was able to gather nearly 500 peace cranes.
Owen lives by a simple motto: do one good deed a day. As a result, he has volunteered his time at local food pantries and homeless lunches, as well as for various charities, including collecting personal hygiene items and delivering them to families affected by Superstorm Sandy. He is the first to volunteer, and his enthusiasm inspires both family and friends to take action, too.
