Lily the Bernese Mountain dog is very proud of all of her schools.  The teachers and guidance counselors at these schools know what is right to teach our kids, and that is to always remember to try and help others.

Your school can be featured as well.  Is one of your classes and/or groups doing something really cool that helps people?  Check out "For Schools". You can also nominate your school directly.

Lily hopes that kids (and teachers) will be inspired by these stories.  Many of these ideas can be copied and carried out right in your own school.  If your school appears on our website in this section, you will be entitled to a free certificate.

Our 7th grade English class has been working on a project to raise money to build a clean water well for a school in Uganda Africa.

The project has inspired actions throughout our community.

We have successfully raised awareness in our school and community and will continue to engage in other forms of philanthropy. Our class has raised the amount of $6000 to complete the well in the Soroti District of Northern Uganda.

Room12 have been studying the topic "How I can make a difference". The class has made a Butterfly Patch to make a difference in our school and will be planting trees in a nearby forest to help our community.

The children decided they would all like to do something special as well on their own. The decision was made to collect as many books that they no longer used and donate them to The Woman's refuge for children less fortunate than themselves. As their teacher, I am very proud of them and believe they deserve to be "Heroes".

Well, the time has come to finally recognize the good work of the children in my class. Almost every day of the school year, we have visited the Kids Are Heroes site and learned about an extraordinary individual. Each of the stories has been an inspiration to us and the children have grown in the understanding that everyone can contribute something to our world. We followed the inspiration of Hannah Turner and conducted our own sock drive. The homeless shelters in the area were very grateful for the warm socks we collected. I'm sure their hearts were warmed as well as their feet. So now the school year is coming to an end. I am nominating my whole class as heroes. As a group they have learned about, and sent shout-outs to every hero on the site. It is their ongoing support of all the heroes that needs recognition. I know they will carry these lessons throughout their lives. Special thanks go to Gabe for bringing these heroes into focus and for allowing us the opportunity to grow into heroes ourselves.

From James Mascia, 12th grade English teacher at Westlake High School: Our kids have taken it upon themselves, with the help of the staff, to do the following things:

1) Raise money for Cancer Research
2) Raise money for Haiti Victims
3) Collect canned food for local food shelter
4) Collected old dresses for girls who couldn't afford prom dresses
5) Began a recycling program
6) Began an energy conservation program
7) Largest participation in Relay for Life for all high schools in the area

These, among others are things that our students have done here at Westlake, that I think make our kids heroes.

This year our school received a grant to purchase a compost tumbler to recycle our food garbage from the cafeteria. The program has had several spinoffs. A group of 5th graders organized a "green team" to clean up the school grounds and then decided to plan and plant a garden using our compost. The garden is full swing and many fruits and vegetables are growing. In addition, many families in New Market are starting to make their own compost at home. Students and families are learning that being green is actually very easy. AND it's good for the earth.

Students in the Bridge Program of Gaithersburg Middle School have started a worm box to learn and teach others the benefits of composting. They are vegetable and fruits scrap from the school cafeteria and their own lunches to help reduce waste in their community. The students are participating in horticulture classes, planting and growing flowers and vegetables which they sell in order to raise money for their program. They will be using the castings (rich soil produced by the worms) as potting soil for their plants, which will reduce their costs (not having to buy as much potting soil and further the concept of REDUCE, REUSE, RECYCLE. This is a hard working and motivated group of students who are determined to make a difference.

I have a group of 21 eighth grade students who recently collected $1451.12 for the WFRE "Country Cares" Radiothon for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. The radiothon will take place on April 16/17 at WFRE's station in Frederick.

The students also created approximately 150 finger puppets for pediatric patients to use when they get their blood drawn. I am very proud of these students. They came up with the project title "Catoctin Cares". They enlisted the help of Catoctin High School's student and staff so they would meet their goal for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. Each day, for 3 weeks, they went to various Homebase classrooms collecting money. They created posters and placed them strategically around the school. They contacted a member of the Catoctin High School staff. They contacted the TMS administration to ask for project permission. Although I made the contact with Jess Wright, WFRE Program Manager, the students were the ones that wanted to know the history behind the hospital and the "Country Cares" event.

Kudos to my students and to the staff and students at both Thurmont Middle School and Catoctin High for helping them reach their goal.
